Resources

The prompts in this project can bring up difficult memories and feelings. If you are struggling or simply feel you would benefit from additional mental health support, we encourage you to learn more about the resources available for you and are providing these to help you get started. There are additional resources further down for specific interest groups including domestic violence survivors and veterans, as well as resources on eldercare and scams that target seniors.

Local Japanese American Community Services, Senior Services and Mental Health Resources

Community and senior service organizations can also be a valuable tool in finding support and building community locally. These are some Japanese American community-based organizations with programs for seniors. Your local Japanese American Citizens League chapter may be able to connect you with additional community-specific resources. Please contact us if you know of others, we're happy to add to the list.

Elder Abuse

Elders are at heightened risk of abuse. 1 in 10 adults over the age of 60 experienced some form of abuse in the last year: this can include physical, emotional and sexual abuse, but can also include neglect, financial abuse, and abandonment. It can be committed by family members, caregivers, friends, community members, strangers, or care institutions. One study suggests elder abuse doubled during the pandemic. To learn more about elder abuse, visit the U.S. Administration on Aging's National Center on Elder Abuse.

Fraud/Scams Targeting Seniors

The National Council on Aging reports that there were 88,262 complaints of fraud resulting in $3.1 billion lost from people over the age of 60--and financial scams are on the rise with robocalls, phone calls, and online. To learn more about some of the forms this takes and how to spot it, check out the Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime and the National Council on Aging websites.

If you are worried about possible elder fraud, you can call the National Elder Fraud Hotline at 833-FRAUD-11. When you identify a scam, report them to the Fair Trade Commission--you can help protect others.
